Aims and Objectives of this Association

The Thamesgate Traditional Arts Association was launched at Old Leigh on 12th November 2007 , by Terry Docherty, who is very enthusiastic about promoting in Southern Essex all aspects of the various forms of traditional folk arts.  Terry has been in the folk scene for quite a few years and it was he who started the Yardarm Session at Old Leigh in January 2007.

The association has a number of ambitious aims and objectives which will require considerable effort to make them happen.  Here are some of them in brief.  To:

  • promote the activities of traditional folk arts in Southern Essex ;
  • encourage public interest in folk arts and traditions;
  • facilitate education in the traditional folk arts for all members of the community;
  • arrange and provide for …. the holding of exhibitions, meetings, lectures, classes, seminars and training courses;
  • investigate means of developing interest and participation and knowledge of the Association;
  • foster links with, support and co-operate with other persons and organizations with similar aims.

Membership is open to all, regardless of residence or work location.  There is no precise geographical boundary for our coverage, though the intention for practical purposes is to concentrate on the southern part of the County of Essex, including regions such as Thurrock, Newham, Romford, Ilford, Brentwood, Basildon, Woodham Ferrers, Maldon, Chelmsford, Rayleigh, Canvey Island, Billericay, Wickford, and the Southend on Sea Borough.  We are based in Southend on Sea.  We want to work in co-operation with other organisations in the same field of interests

Membership for 2008 is just £1 (expiring on 31/12/2008) and this will include the monthly newsletter - by email or home/personal delivery.
